Choosing the Right Wood Type
Every piece of custom furniture starts with the right wood. The type of wood you choose plays a big role in the final look, durability, and character of your piece. Different species each have their own grain patterns, colours, hardness, and natural features, which means the same design can feel completely different depending on the material.

Whether you’re drawn to the warm knots and rustic charm of pine, the clean grain of maple, or the rich tones of hardwoods like walnut or oak, each option offers something unique. Some woods are ideal for achieving a lighter, modern look, while others provide bold grain patterns or deeper colours that make a statement.

When designing your piece, I’ll help guide you through the options based on your style, budget, and how the furniture will be used. From everyday durability to standout natural character, the goal is to select a wood that fits both your vision and your lifestyle.
Custom furniture should feel personal, and choosing the right wood is the first step in bringing that vision to life.

Below are some of the most common woods used in our custom wood pieces to help you find the one that best suits your style and needs.

Pine
Pine is a light, softwood known for its warm colour and natural rustic character. It typically ranges from pale cream to light golden tones and often features visible knots that give each piece a unique, farmhouse-style look. Because pine is softer than hardwoods like oak, maple, or walnut, it is more prone to dents and scratches over time. For this reason, pine is generally best suited for rustic-style furniture or pieces where a more lived-in, distressed look is desired.

Maple
Maple is a strong, durable hardwood known for its smooth grain and light, clean appearance. It typically ranges from creamy white to light golden tones and has a subtle, uniform grain that gives furniture a refined and modern look. Maple is extremely dense and resistant to wear, making it an excellent choice for dining tables and furniture that see heavy daily use. It takes finish well and can be left natural for a bright, contemporary look or stained for a variety of styles.
Ash
Ash is a strong, durable hardwood known for its light colour and striking grain pattern. It typically ranges from pale cream to light brown and features a bold, straight grain that gives furniture a clean, modern look while still showcasing natural character. Ash is highly resilient and has excellent shock resistance, which makes it a great choice for furniture that sees everyday use like dining tables. It takes stain and finish very well, allowing it to be customized from light natural tones to deeper colours while still highlighting the beautiful grain.

Red Oak
Red oak is a durable North American hardwood known for its bold, open grain and warm, natural tones. Its colour typically ranges from light tan to medium brown with subtle reddish undertones, giving furniture a warm and timeless look. The pronounced grain pattern adds character and texture, making each piece unique. Red oak is highly durable and resistant to everyday wear, making it an excellent choice for dining tables and furniture that see daily use. It also takes stain and finish beautifully, allowing for a wide range of colour options while still highlighting the natural beauty of the wood.
White Oak
White oak is a premium hardwood known for its strength, durability, and refined grain pattern. It features warm neutral tones ranging from light beige to medium brown, often with subtle olive or golden undertones. The grain is slightly more closed and uniform than red oak, giving furniture a clean, sophisticated look while still showcasing natural character. White oak is extremely durable and resistant to wear, making it an excellent choice for high-quality dining tables and furniture built to last for generations.

Walnut
Walnut is a premium hardwood prized for its rich colour and elegant grain. It typically ranges from deep chocolate brown to lighter caramel tones, often with beautiful natural variation that gives each piece a unique character. Walnut has a smooth, refined grain and a naturally luxurious appearance that works well in both modern and classic furniture designs. Despite its sophisticated look, it is a strong and durable hardwood, making it an excellent choice for dining tables and furniture.

The Beauty of Natural Wood
Wood is a natural material, which means every piece is unique. Variations in grain patterns, knots, colour, and texture are part of what give custom furniture its character and charm.
Over time, solid wood may also experience natural movement due to changes in temperature and humidity. Small shifts, slight colour changes, and subtle imperfections are normal and part of what makes solid wood furniture special.
Rather than looking identical like manufactured furniture, each piece is one-of-a-kind, built to highlight the natural beauty of the wood itself.
